Jermaine Pennant has emphasized how vital Florian Wirtz has become to Liverpool this season, particularly in linking play.

Initially, Wirtz faced criticism after moving to England due to a lack of immediate goals or assists.

However, he has since adapted and become an essential player. According to Pennant, Liverpool does not perform at their best without Wirtz on the field.

Jermaine Jenas asked the former Liverpool player: “If you were hired by Liverpool and took over in January, what would be your first step? Who would you sell? Who would you bring in? Who would you build the team around?”

Pennant pointed to Wirtz as crucial for linking the midfield and attack.

He stated: “I would choose Florian Wirtz. When he doesn’t play, Liverpool look flat. He is the spark in the team, connecting the midfield to the attack. He’s excellent on the ball.”

After a slow start, the 22-year-old has now recorded six goals and eight assists across all competitions.

Since arriving last summer, Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike have built a strong partnership, combining for six goals this season—more than any other duo in the squad.

This is the highest tally by any duo under 23 in a single campaign, tying the record set by Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen in 2002/03.

With Wirtz returning from injury against Wolves, it’s likely he and Ekitike will break the club record soon.
