Kevin Kelsy scored in the 96th minute, leading the Portland Timbers to a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles FC, handing them their first loss of the season on Saturday.
Kelsy netted his first goal of the season by heading in a cross from Brandon Bye, breaking a five-match winless run for the Timbers (2-4-1, 7 points).
For LAFC (5-1-1, 16 points), Jude Terry scored in his MLS starting debut. Cabral Carter, who stepped in after Thomas Hasal was injured, made six saves in his first MLS match.
Starting goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has six clean sheets this season, and league assist leader Son Heung-Min rested for the upcoming second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal against Cruz Azul in Puebla, Mexico, on Tuesday, where LAFC won the first leg 3-0.
Hasal left the game due to concussion protocol after colliding with teammate Artem Smolyakov, who was shoved by Timber defender Brandon Bye while trying to play the ball.
Carter, a 21-year-old from the LAFC Academy, previously played collegiately at Pittsburgh and had 21 appearances for LAFC2 in the MLS NEXT Pro League.
Two minutes in, Carter faced his first MLS shot when Kristoffer Velde scored from the top right edge of the box, giving Portland a 1-0 lead and ending LAFC’s MLS record 572-minute shutout streak.
Carter made an impressive triple save in the 42nd minute while on the ground near the six-yard box.
LAFC equalized in the 49th minute with Terry’s right-footed shot curling into the top right corner. Matt Evans and Denis Bouanga assisted on the goal.
In the 87th minute, LAFC thought they had taken the lead with Ryan Porteous’s header, but a VAR review ruled it offside, paving the way for Kelsy’s last-minute winning goal.
James Pantemis of Portland made four saves, while LAFC took 19 shots but only managed to get five on target.
