After a scoreless first 80 minutes, Cincinnati’s attack surged with goals from Denkey, one of last year’s top scorers, and Hagglund, a local favorite.
Despite losing All-Star forward Evander to an injury in the 11th minute, FC Cincinnati secured three points against an Eastern Conference rival that has been a challenge for them in recent years.
Evander appeared to hurt his right knee without contact but walked off the field on his own. He was substituted in the 13th minute.
Cincinnati (1-0-0, 3 points) controlled possession in the second half, finishing with 55.3 percent. They took nine shots, with three on target, scoring twice.
Goalkeeper Roman Celentano faced several chances from Atlanta (0-1-0, 0 points) in the first half, achieving three saves and a clean sheet.
The match was physical, with both teams fighting hard for position during corners and free kicks.
A total of three yellow cards and 28 fouls were called, along with 12 offsides against both teams.
Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos received support from his defense for most of the second half but ultimately conceded two goals without making any saves.
Atlanta’s offense also recorded nine shots and three on goal but managed only two corner kicks and three crosses during the match. They were flagged for seven offsides and committed 18 fouls.
