La Liga is the leading soccer league in Spain, known for its competitiveness and talent. Real Madrid and Barcelona have both won the Champions League multiple times and are home to some of Europe’s best teams. Many famous players have graced this league, highlighted by a few iconic figures.
Diego Maradona
Maradona, often compared to Pele, made headlines when he transferred to Barcelona for a record fee. Although his stint in La Liga was brief, he scored 22 goals for the club. He played a pivotal role in Argentina’s victory at the 1986 World Cup, famously scoring the “Goal of the Century” against England in the quarter-finals by dribbling through several defenders before scoring again. Along with Pele, he was named FIFA Player of the 20th Century.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for being Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer. He averaged more than one goal per game during his time with the club, netting an impressive 48 goals in the 2014–2015 La Liga season. Ronaldo reached the 100-goal milestone in La Liga faster than any other player and is the second-highest scorer in the league’s history.
