In a thrilling match on Saturday, Toronto FC secured a 3-2 comeback victory against the Colorado Rapids, thanks to a late header by Josh Sargent from an Alonso Coello corner in the 85th minute.
Richie Laryea also scored for Toronto (3-2-1, 10 points), while Paxten Aaronson and Keegan Rosenberry found the net for the Rapids (3-3-0, 9 points) in a match filled with fouls.
The game became physical early on, with Colorado’s Jackson Travis red-carded in the 34th minute. Toronto’s Raheem Edwards followed suit, receiving a red card in the 49th minute. Shortly after, Rapids’ Miguel Navarro was sent off with a second yellow card in the 74th minute.
In the 65th minute, Laryea scored a spectacular goal, narrowing Colorado’s lead to 2-1 with a shot into the top right corner. Shortly after Navarro’s sending-off, Rosenberry’s back pass led to an own goal that leveled the match at 2-2 when Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen mishandled the ball in the 77th minute.
After the red card issue with Edwards, Aaronson scored from just outside the box in the 51st minute, putting Colorado ahead 1-0 as the ball slipped through the Toronto wall. Following this, Rafael Navarro won a ball down the sideline, and Rosenberry scored with a low shot inside the far post, extending Colorado’s lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute.
The match became increasingly tense, with a review leading to Travis’s red card for a challenging tackle on Edwards in the 35th minute. Soon after, Edwards sent Wayne Frederick into the boards during a chase for the ball, which did not result in a whistle, but Colorado’s coach Matt Wells received a yellow card in objection. As halftime approached, Toronto defender Walker Zimmerman was also given a yellow card for a challenge from behind. Colorado had collected four yellow cards, while Toronto received three.
