Manchester United is reportedly interested in signing young Premier League defender Michael Kayode from Brentford.
However, they are not the only club showing interest. Reports from TEAMtalk indicate that Manchester City is also monitoring the 21-year-old.
In addition, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move, although they are less likely to act compared to the two Manchester clubs.
Arsenal may pursue Kayode only if Ben White leaves. Newcastle’s interest depends on Tino Livramento’s situation, while Tottenham will need to ensure their survival in the Premier League before targeting new players.
Kayode joined Brentford in January 2025 from Fiorentina, signing a contract lasting until 2030. He has played for Italy at the youth level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.
How would Michael Kayode improve Manchester United?
Despite recent good performances, Manchester United still faces challenges within the squad. The right-back position is one of their weaker areas, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui not fully convincing this season.
United’s U21 team also lacks a strong right-back. Although Kayode’s signing isn’t essential, it could be beneficial for the club’s future. At 21, he brings youthful energy compared to current right-back options.
On a positive note, Dalot’s play has improved significantly after Ruben Amorim’s departure, suggesting that the need to sign a new right-back might be less pressing.
What would he bring to Manchester City?
Although Manchester City’s squad is generally stronger, acquiring Kayode might be more beneficial for them. Matheus Nunes has performed well in a secondary full-back role but lacks the necessary speed typically expected from a wing-back.
Additionally, Pep Guardiola seems to have cooled on Rico Lewis, who has seen limited action in the current season despite his role last year. Losing Nunes as a right-back option could be a setback, especially as he has tallied six assists this season.
Who needs him the most?
While City has a blend of experienced and younger players, United’s right-backs are both older than 25. Although Mazraoui and Dalot are relatively young, having an emerging talent like Kayode could strengthen the team’s future.
Even with limited playing time, Lewis could become instrumental for City going forward. Regardless, Kayode’s speed, defensive skills, and attacking threat would make him a valuable addition for either team.
