Manchester City drew 1-1 with West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday. With this result, City now trails Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League standings, although they have a game in hand. After drawing with Nottingham Forest and West Ham, City’s title challenge appears to be facing difficulties. In the match against West Ham, City struggled to create clear chances for the first hour. In the last thirty minutes, they made opportunities but failed to convert any, which has been a recurring problem this season.

Manchester City had control but lacked quality in the final third.

Pep Guardiola spoke about his team’s inability to finish their chances, which cost them against West Ham. He pointed out that if they can create better openings, Erling Haaland will regain his scoring form. After the match, Guardiola noted the importance of connections and teamwork, saying, “We miss goals, but it isn’t solely about individual players. In the first half, we controlled the game but didn’t create enough threat. For Erling to contribute, we need to improve in that area.”

Finding the right mix in attack should enhance City’s performance.

It’s clear that Pep Guardiola is still figuring out the best attacking lineup for this new Manchester City team. This is expected, especially with Antoine Semenyo joining the club recently and still adapting. While Jeremy Doku had been a starter in previous matches, Guardiola seemed to rotate players, leading to some lack of cohesion. Starting Erling Haaland, Omar Marmoush, and Antoine Semenyo together can be effective in theory but has not worked seamlessly in practice. Without a creative player behind them to support their runs, the attack has struggled. Players like Tijjani Reijnders, Phil Foden, and Rayan Cherki could provide solutions, but Foden’s form has been lacking, Reijnders has not been impactful this season, and Cherki mainly came off the bench recently. Finding the right balance between stability in midfield and creativity in attack is still a challenge for Guardiola.

Final thoughts.

Manchester City’s issues with poor finishing and creativity have cost them in draws against Sunderland, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, and Brighton this season. These five matches have hurt their title ambitions. Guardiola has yet to find the right formula that balances control and creativity in City’s play. Once this balance is achieved, City could become a more potent team. However, given the extent of the team’s rebuild, it may take until next season to find the optimal solution.
