Manchester United was eliminated from the Champions League in the Quarter-Finals after Bayern Munich scored two goals in three minutes.
This season, the Red Devils’ Women’s team made their debut in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, performing well throughout their campaign.
In the 2023/24 season, despite reaching the qualifying rounds, they were knocked out by PSG, marking their first experience in the finals.
Their qualifying journey included a 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven, where Elisabeth Terland scored three goals. They also secured a spot in the group stages by beating SK Brann on aggregate.
In a dramatic first match against Brann, the team arrived in Bergen without their boots and had to buy 15 pairs locally. They lost the first leg 1-0, but thanks to another hat-trick from Terland, they won 3-1 on aggregate.
From October to December 2025, Manchester United faced top teams in Europe, achieving victories over Atletico Madrid (1-0) and PSG (2-1), avenging a previous loss.
However, two straight defeats to Wolfsburg (5-2) and Lyon (3-0) were setbacks, though they bounced back with a 1-0 win against Juventus.
With 12 points from six matches, they finished sixth, subsequently drawing Atletico Madrid in the knockout stage. After previously losing to United, Madrid sought revenge but were eliminated by a 5-0 aggregate defeat.
This strong performance set the stage for their match with Bayern Munich, who narrowly edged out United.
The first leg at Old Trafford ended with a 3-2 victory for Bayern, where Pernille Harder scored twice. Maya Le Tisier converted a penalty, and Hanna Lundkvist added another goal, while substitute Momoko Tanikawa secured the win for Munich.
Heading into the second leg in Germany, United needed a win. They started strong with a goal from Melvine Malard in the 11th minute. However, Bayern turned the game around with a goal from Glodis Viggosdottir in the 81st minute and another from Linda Dallmann in the 84th minute.
In the end, Bayern won 5-3 on aggregate, concluding United’s remarkable debut in the Champions League.
Now, the Red Devils have gained experience in European competition but are tied on 38 points with Arsenal, who are currently third and fourth in the Women’s Super League.
The top three teams qualify for the Champions League, but Arsenal has two games in hand and a nine-goal difference advantage over United.
If Arsenal wins their next two matches, they could surpass Chelsea, who are in second place with 40 points. With just three games left for United, the battle to qualify for next year’s Champions League continues.
