A new stadium near its current Old Trafford home
Manchester United has made grand plans to construct a new stadium near its current Old Trafford home, with a capacity of 100,000, at an estimated cost of £2 billion.
“World’s greatest football stadium” is what Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated he wants to construct.
When investing in their new stadium, Manchester United “risk” slipping further behind their competitors, according to CEO Omar Berrada.
After 115 years at Old Trafford, United revealed intentions to move to a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000.
“World’s greatest football stadium”
The proposal is projected to cost over £2 billion ($2.59 billion), which would put a lot of strain on already tight resources following losses of over £300 million ($388.57 million) over the previous three years.
The architects claim that the canopy shape of the new stadium, which they have named ‘New Trafford’ in a briefing document, will collect rainwater and solar energy.

United claims that the new stadium and the larger Old Trafford revitalization project may generate an extra £7.3 billion for the UK economy each year in addition to the development of almost 17,000 new houses and 92,000 new jobs.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, said: “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.
Preserve the essence of Old Trafford
“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.”
In an intriguing aside, United believe the new stadium will therefore be visible, on a clear day, from ‘the outskirts of Liverpool’.
“This becomes a global destination,” said Foster. “This has to be one of the most exciting projects in the world today.”
