Mason Greenwood has been performing well since joining Marseille, gaining attention once again, though not for his scoring.

After a productive loan at Getafe, where he scored ten goals and provided six assists in 36 matches, Marseille quickly secured him for Ligue 1.

The French club paid around £26 million for the forward last summer, a choice that has proven wise this season.

Greenwood has become a crucial attacking player for Marseille, helping the team in their push for Champions League qualification.

Last season, the 24-year-old scored 21 league goals, winning the Ligue 1 golden boot, and this year he has 25 goals in all competitions.

However, Greenwood’s latest match for Marseille was marked by less admirable behavior.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the former Manchester United player was involved in a heated confrontation during Marseille’s game against Lille on Sunday.

The incident took place just 13 minutes into the match when Greenwood was fouled by Calvin Verdonk, who received a yellow card.

Greenwood immediately confronted the defender, only to be knocked down by Hakon Haraldsson as more players joined in.

Both Greenwood and Haraldsson were booked for their involvement in the scuffle.

Afterward, Greenwood’s day became even more tumultuous when he was substituted shortly after due to injury.

The 24-year-old was replaced by Ethan Nwaneri, who scored just before half-time.

Unfortunately for Marseille, this did not lead to a turnaround.

Lille came back strong in the second half, with Thomas Meunier and Olivier Giroud scoring, resulting in a tough defeat for Marseille in their bid for a top-three finish.

This is significant because Marseille has heavily relied on Greenwood’s performance in the final third.

With 25 goals and eight assists, he has been essential in keeping them in the Champions League race.

This success has sparked ongoing transfer discussions, with reports suggesting that Juventus is interested, and a fee of around £60 million is being mentioned.

If Marseille sells him at that price, Manchester United could receive a considerable share due to a 50% sell-on clause.

For now, the main concern for Marseille is Greenwood’s fitness after a match that was filled with goals, cards, and controversy.
