Manchester United‘s players are under the spotlight as England prepares for the 2026 World Cup, with positions still available as the season nears its end.

With Thomas Tuchel evaluating his options, each player aims to prove their worth for a spot on the team.

Three United players are in the mix for selection.

England lost 1-0 to Japan, where Kobbie Mainoo started, and Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire came on in the second half.

Mainoo’s performance received attention, with ratings showing it was a challenging night for the young midfielder. The Guardian scored him 4/10, commenting, “Japan’s goal revealed defensive weaknesses. Was he responsible for other chances too? Are World Cup hopes gone?”

The Mirror offered a more balanced perspective, giving him 6/10 and noting, “He had tidy passing but didn’t penetrate Japan’s defense.”

Meanwhile, The Sun was more critical, rating him 3/10 and stating, “He struggled with Japan’s pace and his passing was off; he might have been responsible for a second goal if not for Ezri Konsa.”

“He was England’s most tenacious midfielder and won many duels, but we didn’t see his best performance in crucial moments,” they added.

Rashford’s short time on the field was viewed more positively, earning 7/10 from The Mirror, while both The Guardian and The Sun gave him 6/10.

His future remains uncertain after Barcelona missed the chance to sign him permanently.

Maguire also received consistent ratings of 6/10 from various sources.

With seven league matches left for Manchester United, the focus now returns to club football.
