Michael Dawson sees this star as the next Tottenham boss.
Following the dismissal of Thomas Frank after an eight-game winless streak, Tottenham Hotspur faces a significant decision that could influence the club’s future. Former Spurs captain Michael Dawson believes the interim option should be Robbie Keane.
Frank’s departure came after a 2-1 loss to Newcastle, which led to boos from the fans and ultimately ended his time at the club. Despite his hopes to stay on for the North London Derby, the club acted quickly, ending his tenure after eight months.
The question now is whether Spurs should seek a long-term appointment, like Roberto De Zerbi, Mauricio Pochettino, or Oliver Glasner, or choose an interim manager until they reassess their options in the summer.
Return Beckoning For Robbie Keane?
Dawson emphasized that if the club opts for an interim solution, Keane would be the ideal candidate. On Sky Sports News, he highlighted Keane’s connection to the club, which could help revive a disillusioned fanbase.
“They’ve got a huge decision to make. I hear everyone talking about an interim – we don’t know. If that happens, I think there’s only one manager they’re waiting for, and that has to be Pochettino in the summer. Or do they go get someone now, and people are asking; ‘Well, who will that be?’ There’s someone there in the making, someone who knows the football club, has passion, played for the club, loves it, and can galvanize everyone, and that’s Robbie Keane for me.”
Keane, who had 163 goal contributions in the Premier League, is currently doing well with Ferencvarosi TC, competing for the top spot in the Hungarian league and in the Europa League knockout stages. This success makes a return to Tottenham challenging, as it’s hard to imagine a manager leaving a title race and European football for a short-term role.
However, if Spurs trust Keane’s character and energy, should they limit him to an interim position? The club has previously hired big-name managers like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, and they have explored various strategies. Perhaps the next choice should focus on identity.
Whether the board agrees with Dawson’s view remains to be seen. As Tottenham considers both interim and long-term options, it’s vital that the next appointment aligns with the club’s values. In Dawson’s opinion, Robbie Keane is the only interim who truly understands that.
