Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, had a successful career as a midfielder before becoming a coach.
He developed his skills at Barcelona’s La Masia academy and went on to play for PSG, Rangers, Everton, and ultimately Arsenal.
Arteta filled various midfield roles during his playing days, but he now prefers the idea of playing as a forward.

Many young players aspire to be strikers. William Saliba, for example, scored numerous goals from that position, and others in the team have expressed similar dreams.
Although Mikel Arteta began his youth career as a forward, he found success in midfield.
He was skilled with the ball, had great passing ability, and contributed goals during his time in the Premier League, including several impressive long-range shots.
In a press conference this past Tuesday, Arteta was asked about changes in the game and his current ability to compete.
His reply was: “Me? As a nine, only as a nine!”
Mikel Arteta’s Previous Thoughts on Playing as a Striker
Arteta is known for his confidence and straightforwardness.
Back in 2025, when Arsenal faced numerous injuries and lacked fit strikers, a journalist lightheartedly asked him about an old goal he scored.
The reporter remarked: “Remember that goal? You took it down perfectly, hit it from 20 yards with your right foot, and there was no chance for Pepe Reina.”
He added: “It seems you might have a solution to the striker issue?”
Arteta chuckled and replied: “I think we will be in big trouble, my friend.”
