After a challenging start to the 2026 MLS season, CF Montreal looks to recover quickly as they take on the Chicago Fire this Saturday.

Montreal (0-1-0, 0 points) began the season with a heavy 5-0 loss to San Diego FC last week. They fell behind 2-0 by halftime due to an early goal and one in stoppage time. A red card for new player Tomas Aviles in the 50th minute left Montreal with one less player for the rest of the match. San Diego scored two goals within six minutes of Aviles leaving the field, adding another goal in the 85th minute.

Coach Marco Donadel said they must adjust their mindset, both when a player is missing and when the team is at full strength. He emphasized the need to stay competitive and regain momentum during corners and other situations.

Last season, scoring was also a struggle for Montreal, with the team netting only 34 goals. They failed to score in 12 of their 34 matches and managed just one goal in 15 games. Their goal differential was the second worst in the league at minus-26.

Prince Owusu led the team in scoring last year with a personal best of 13 goals and 38 shots on target. Dante Sealy finished with nine goals, but he has since been traded to the Colorado Rapids.

Against San Diego, the team had only two shots on target.

On the other hand, the Fire are also looking to rebound after losing 2-1 to Houston despite leading 1-0 at halftime.

Midfielder Anton Saletros stressed the importance of game management, noting that they need to remember that the game can shift quickly, especially in MLS.

Chicago attempted six shots in their last match, with three on target, all during the first half.

Last season, Chicago was one of MLS’s top offenses, scoring 32 out of their total 68 goals at home.
