Thomas Muller scored two goals in the first half, helping the Whitecaps secure a 3-0 win over Toronto FC on Saturday night in Vancouver.
Brian White also found the net in the first half, and goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made three saves, earning his second straight clean sheet to start the MLS season.
With this win, Vancouver (2-0-0, 6 points) has now won four of its last five regular-season matches against Toronto.
The Reds (0-2-0, 0 points) now hold a record of 6-9-4 in their 19 games against Vancouver.
In the second half, Toronto had a chance to score when Djordje Mihailovic thought he had found the net in the 55th minute, but he was ruled offside.
Later, in the 74th minute, Takaoka made a crucial diving save against Toronto’s Jose Cifuentes, marking the Reds’ first shot on target in the match.
Vancouver had the upper hand in the first half, registering five shots on target.
Aziel Jackson was awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute after being fouled by Walker Zimmerman. Muller converted the penalty, placing his right-footed shot in the bottom-left corner past Luka Gavran.
Muller scored again in the 36th minute as Sebastian Berhalter’s corner was headed to him by Mathias Laborda, allowing Muller to fire a left-footed shot into an empty goal.
In first-half stoppage time, another corner from Berhalter caught Gavran out of position, enabling White to score with a right-footed shot.
Next, Vancouver will play their first away match of the season against Portland next Saturday. Toronto will visit Cincinnati next Sunday to complete a three-game road trip to start the season.
