David Moyes signed a six-year contract when he took over Manchester United in 2013, with strong support from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Replacing Ferguson was a tough challenge, but Moyes had a solid reputation from his time at Everton, where he managed well despite tight budgets.
He began by winning the Community Shield, but poor results followed, resulting in the club’s worst start to a season since 1989.
Throughout his time, fans mostly supported him, even booing a plane banner that called for his removal. However, after a 2-0 loss to Everton in April, and with Champions League qualification no longer possible for the first time since 1995/96, Moyes was let go.
Since then, he has managed several Premier League teams and has returned to Goodison Park. During his time at Manchester United, he won 27 out of 51 matches.
Moyes was dismissed after the loss to Everton, marking their second defeat to the team that season, which also ended their Champions League hopes.
Phil Neville was part of Moyes’ coaching staff at that time and later followed him to Valencia before moving on to a broadcasting career with BBC Sport and Sky Sports.
David Moyes’ Manchester United Tenure and Unforgettable Records
Moyes started his six-year contract in 2013, recommended by Ferguson.
Taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to be difficult. Moyes transitioned from over ten years at Everton, where he managed successfully despite budget constraints.
Fans generally supported him, even booing a plane banner calling for his exit during games at Old Trafford.
He was fired after United’s 2-0 defeat to his old club Everton on April 20, which effectively ended any chance of qualifying for the Champions League that season.
Nicky Butt, speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football, shared his thoughts on Moyes’ time: “He didn’t get enough time. He should have had more time. The only mistake I see is that he didn’t have enough support; someone like Mike Phelan could have helped.”
However, Butt might not know that Moyes did bring Phil Neville onto his coaching staff at United.
