On March 4, just nine days before the 2026 NWSL season starts, the Portland Thorns announced Robert Vilahamn as their new head coach. The team had been without a coach since November 25, when they parted ways with Rob Gale after a year. The delay in appointing a new coach raised concerns about whether the Thorns would begin the season directionless.

Vilahamn, a Swedish coach experienced in women’s soccer, previously led Tottenham Hotspur Women in England’s top league and has had success in Sweden, coaching both men’s and women’s teams at BK Häcken in Gothenburg, among other clubs.

“Robert brings managerial experience from top levels of women’s soccer, a proven ability to help players develop, and fresh global perspectives,” said Jeff Agoos, President and General Manager of Soccer Operations, in a statement released by the Thorns.

Vilahamn will join the team in Portland once his visa is approved and aims to make a swift impact. He stated, “The club has everything I look for: a clear ambition to win, a passionate fan base, and a strong environment for developing talented players.”

Reactions to Vilahamn’s appointment have been varied. On platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, some supporters express enthusiasm for his arrival, believing he can revitalize a team known for its high standards. Others, however, highlight mixed results during his time with Tottenham, questioning his readiness for this new challenge or suggesting that interim coach Sarah Lowdon should have been retained.

While many NWSL coaches have backgrounds in U.S. soccer, which Vilahamn may lack, he has a strong track record in player development and a readiness to give chances to young talent. This approach could resonate well in Portland, where young players often flourish alongside experienced veterans. The outcome remains uncertain, but the Thorns will kick off the season in just nine days against the Washington Spirit.
