The Portland Thorns have announced the appointment of Robert Vilahamn as head coach.
The 43-year-old from Sweden last managed Tottenham Hotspur in England’s Women’s Super League, where he led the team to the Women’s FA Cup final in his first season, during 2023-25.
Vilahamn takes over from Rob Gale, who was let go following a semifinal loss in the NWSL playoffs last November.
Thorns general manager Jeff Agoos stated, “Robert brings valuable experience from the women’s game, with a strong history of player development. His proactive style aligns with our goals and those of our supporters, and we are excited to welcome him to Portland.”
Before joining Tottenham, Vilahamn coached the BK Hacken women’s team in Sweden from 2021-23, leading them to the UEFA Women’s Champions League in both years and reaching the Swedish Cup finals consecutively.
Since becoming a founding club in 2013, the Thorns have made the playoffs every year except one and have won league titles in 2013, 2017, and 2022.
“I’m thrilled and grateful to be the new head coach of the Portland Thorns,” Vilahamn said. “This club has a clear ambition to win, an amazing fan base, and a strong environment for developing players. The NWSL is the most competitive league globally, and joining it is a significant step in my career. I look forward to this new chapter in Portland.”
