The 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season began on Friday with a game that had less excitement than expected, considering it was on Friday the 13th. In a surprising turn, the Portland Thorns beat the favored Washington Spirit in front of a full crowd at Audi Field.

The first half was uneven, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm and failing to get shots on target. Portland, having just appointed their new head coach Robert Vilahamn nine days ago, looked disorganized. Washington performed slightly better but still could not effectively challenge the Thorns’ goalkeeper.

While Washington seemed to create more chances, it was Portland that found the net first and only. Midfielder Olivia Moultrie, at just 20 years old and the longest-serving active player for the Thorns, scored the game-winner. She was assisted by Pietra Tordin, who recorded her first career assist in the league.
