Real Madrid recognizes Thibaut Courtois as one of the best goalkeepers globally, having won the Champions League twice and serving as a key leader. However, with his age, the club is considering younger options to succeed him, including Bart Verbruggen and Gregor Kobel.
Jorge C. Picon, a former reporter, shared insights on X.com about Real Madrid’s concerns over potentially losing Courtois. He has been crucial for the team since Florentino Perez made the controversial decision to replace Keylor Navas with Courtois, who faced challenges early in his career at the club.
While Andriy Lunin, a strong backup keeper who could easily start, is part of the squad, some within the club remain uncertain about him taking over for Courtois. Lunin is also considering a move for a more prominent role, aiming for a starting position by 2026.
Kobel has impressed at Borussia Dortmund, consistently delivering top performances and matching the quality of his predecessor, Yann Sommer. Verbruggen is also making a name for himself at Brighton in the Premier League. Though not as highly regarded as Kobel, he has a respectable save percentage of 71.8 this season.
Courtois is expected to remain with the club for a few more years, but if Real Madrid seeks a goalkeeper who clearly surpasses Lunin, Kobel could be a key option.
