Rio Ferdinand has shared a strong opinion about Lamine Yamal after the young Barcelona player spoke out against anti-Muslim chants from Spanish fans.

This issue goes beyond football, highlighting problems that are appearing in stadiums throughout Europe. Yamal’s comments are significant not only because of their content but also because of the person delivering them.

Rio Ferdinand praises Lamine Yamal for speaking out on anti-Muslim chants

Ferdinand expressed his views in a post on social media, reacting to Yamal’s brave decision to speak on the matter. He noted how rare it is for a young player to openly address an issue like this.

Rio stated, “Lamine Yamal makes me love football again. … What I admire about him is that he’s more than just a footballer.”

“He’s using his voice to highlight anti-Muslim chants at stadiums. ‘I’m a Muslim. Yesterday, at the stadium, the chant heard was, the one who doesn’t jump is the Muslim,’” he added.

Ferdinand emphasized Yamal’s choice to speak out on something larger than the sport itself.

Ferdinand further explored the context of Yamal’s comments and their importance.

“‘I understand I was playing for the rival team, and it wasn’t aimed personally at me. But as a Muslim, it remains disrespectful and intolerable.’ This is a young person speaking,” Rio continued.

He concluded by saying: “This isn’t a veteran player with ten years of experience. This is an 18-year-old who decided to say, ‘I won’t accept that.’”

“That’s disrespectful. It’s unacceptable. It’s racist, and people need to be aware. I thought that comment was well-stated.”

The focus on Yamal’s young age emphasizes why his response is impactful.

For Ferdinand, the importance lies not only in the words spoken but also in the fact that they came from someone at the beginning of his career.
