Rio Ferdinand spoke after interviewing Diogo Dalot, a player who worked under Amorim at Manchester United and is now a key member of the Portugal national team.
Ferdinand highlighted the contrast between Ferguson’s lasting impact and the uncertainty during Amorim’s time as manager.
“Yeah, I mean, listen, the interview will go into that,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.
“But sometimes you find yourself in situations where a new manager arrives, and you think, ‘He’s in charge, let him lead us.’ That’s what we experienced with Sir Alex Ferguson. We would often help resolve issues.
“But with a new manager, you wait for him to establish the club’s direction, and you look to follow that path.”
Rio Ferdinand compares how former Manchester United icons would handle changes during Ferguson’s and Amorim’s times
Ferdinand was asked how Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs would have dealt with team changes while he played. He believes they would have managed well, but noted that the current team dynamics are different.
“Yeah, definitely,” Ferdinand added.
“That’s something we had. But our team was more experienced and ran smoothly.
“There were players who knew how to manage a successful locker room. Today’s players are looking for guidance, and that’s where I see a key difference.”
Michael Carrick has made a solid start since taking over from Amorim, winning four of his first five Premier League matches as interim manager of Manchester United.
