Rio Ferdinand has given a surprising and positive review of Indian cricket player Shubman Gill, highlighting an off-field meeting that made an impact on him.
The former Manchester United star focused on Gill’s mindset rather than his achievements, pointing out the traits that distinguish top athletes.

Ferdinand shared details of their meeting on Instagram, expressing why Gill stood out among many athletes he has encountered.
“Shubman Gill – I meet a lot of sports stars on my travels, but not many have displayed such a curious mind as quickly as Shubman,” he said.
“After we ordered our drinks, I noticed his curiosity through the detailed questions he asked about my football journey, leadership, and relationships. It was clear he wanted to draw parallels that he could apply to his cricket career,” Ferdinand wrote.
Ferdinand emphasized Gill’s desire to learn, viewing him as someone who actively seeks improvement beyond his own sport.
“Who knows what he will take from our conversation, but for someone so young to engage in questions with the intention to better himself is impressive,” he added.
For Ferdinand, this interaction reinforced the idea that successful athletes are often open to learning from diverse experiences.
Rio Ferdinand praises Shubman Gill’s humility
Ferdinand continued to express his admiration for Gill’s attitude in the same Instagram post.
“It was refreshing to see someone who has already achieved so much in cricket display humility you would expect from someone earlier in their career,” he said.
“I’m inspired to return to India soon…stay tuned, India! See you soon, Prince,” Ferdinand concluded.
This praise was notable as it contrasted his accomplishments with his behavior. Despite his quick rise in cricket, Gill was described as grounded and self-aware.
Ferdinand’s remarks also highlighted the broader appeal of the next generation in cricket, showing how such interactions connect different sports through common values.
