Michael Carrick has emerged as a strong candidate for the Manchester United managerial position since taking over from Ruben Amorim on an interim basis in January.
Amorim’s role became difficult towards the end of his time at the club, while Carrick has brought a positive atmosphere with improved results and performances.
The style of play hasn’t always been the most attractive, but the Red Devils are accumulating points as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies.
After a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, Carrick’s team currently sits third in the Premier League, with eight matches remaining.
Roberto De Zerbi is one of the preferred choices by INEOS for the managerial role, but he is expected to make a decision in the summer.
This raises the question of whether the club might turn to Carrick for a full-time position if he manages to secure a Champions League spot for next season.
There has been considerable discussion about United’s prospects of finishing in the top four and securing Champions League football. Roy Keane believes their recent win against Aston Villa confirms their place.
After the match at Old Trafford, Keane stated: “Yeah, I think we’re certs for it. No distractions, just focus on the games and get some recovery.”
He noted that Villa seemed a bit off their game after their midweek Europa League match, and that United controlled the second half. “If you give players like Bruno [Fernandes] time and space, you’re going to be punished,” he added.
Keane then remarked, “I think United are absolute certs for that Champions League spot.” His past comments on the team have not always been so supportive.
Three months ago, he insisted that suggesting Carrick as a permanent manager would have seemed far-fetched.
“I respect his effort, but there are better options out there. The pressure on him isn’t significant right now, given that they finished 15th last year, so expectations are low,” he said.
“Getting carried away with being third doesn’t sit well with me. I feel excitement only when teams start winning trophies. If you’d have mentioned him three months ago [as the permanent manager], you’d have been considered crazy.”
On the other hand, Wayne Rooney defended his former teammate, suggesting Carrick is the best fit for the role.
