Sir Jim Ratcliffe is facing backlash after his comments at the European Industrial Summit in Antwerp earlier today.

He discussed the UK’s issues with benefits and the economy, stating, “The UK has been colonised by immigrants.”

This remark has drawn significant criticism, particularly concerning his role as a co-owner of Manchester United.

Prime Minister Kier Starmer has called for Ratcliffe to apologize, labeling his comments as “offensive and wrong.”

The anti-racism group Show Racism The Red Card has also expressed concern over Ratcliffe’s statements.

In a social media post, they stated: “Show Racism the Red Card is deeply concerned by the comments by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, suggesting that the United Kingdom is being ‘colonised.’”

They further noted: “Language like this can stigmatize migrant communities, increase division, and justify hostility toward minority groups.”

As hate crimes rise and communities feel less secure, the group emphasized the importance for public figures to recognize the implications of their words.

“Britain’s diversity is shaped by migration,” they said. “Referring to it as ‘colonisation’ reinforces negative stereotypes and can divide people.”

They called on leaders in sports, business, and public life to promote inclusive and respectful language.

“Football clubs and their leaders have a significant cultural influence. Their teams include players from around the world, who are viewed as heroes by fans.”

“This influence should be used to combat racism, not unintentionally support divisive narratives.”

“Show Racism the Red Card is dedicated to fighting racism in all forms and fostering a society where everyone feels they belong.”
