Tottenham face Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of the Champions League last 16.

Tottenham Hotspur will pause their Premier League commitments to play against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

Spurs are struggling in the Premier League, having lost their last five matches. A recent 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace increased the pressure on interim manager Igor Tudor, who took over from Thomas Frank last month.

Tottenham’s fourth-place finish in the Champions League group stage kept Frank in charge for longer. However, poor performances in the league ultimately led to his firing in February. Now, it’s up to Igor Tudor to guide Tottenham past Atletico Madrid and into the quarter-finals.

Spanish football expert explains how Tottenham can surprise Atletico Madrid

Tudor shared an encouraging fitness update for the Spurs squad before traveling to the Wanda Metropolitano. Djed Spence and Radu Dragusin are back in action, and team captain Cristian Romero is also returning to the lineup after serving a four-match suspension in the league.

With key players returning, Spurs are optimistic about their chances against Atletico Madrid. Spanish football expert Sully noted that this Atletico team is not as defensively strong as in the past, suggesting that Tottenham could find opportunities if they apply pressure in the attacking third.

“This Atleti team is not like one of the strong defensive sides from the early Simeone era,” Sully explained to Tottenham News.

“They can be made to look vulnerable and will offer up chances if Spurs can apply the pressure in the final third.”

Atletico have had standout performances in crucial matches this season. While their La Liga form has been inconsistent, they have excelled in cup competitions.

Recently, they secured a place in the Spanish Cup final by defeating league leaders Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate. This match highlighted Atletico’s varying form, as Barcelona nearly staged a comeback from a four-goal deficit in the first leg.

However, playing at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Champions League, Atletico will be prepared and aim to gain a strong advantage before the return leg in North London next week. The challenge now is whether Tudor’s Tottenham can rise to the occasion in Europe.
