Recent reports from Turkey indicate that Leeds United and Sunderland both made attempts to sign Gabriel Sara during the winter transfer window. According to Fotospor, as shared by Sport Witness, both clubs engaged in discussions with the Brazilian midfielder and his current team, Galatasaray. The 26-year-old playmaker has shown his skills in the Championship with Norwich City, but he is not eager to return to the UK.

Leeds and Sunderland Show Interest in Gabriel Sara

The report suggests that Sara and Galatasaray felt the offers from Leeds and Sunderland were inadequate. They did not view the proposals as significant enough for a mid-season transfer. As a result, the player opted to remain in the Süper Lig, where his performance has been rising after notable displays in European competitions.

The report did not provide specific figures for the bids, but the rejection highlights a significant difference in valuation. Sara moved to Turkey for around £15 million in 2024 and has become an essential part of Galatasaray’s midfield. His recent performances, including a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory over Juventus in the Champions League, have enhanced his reputation.

Another Turkish source, Sabah, noted that European scouts took notice during the Juventus match, where his abilities impressed many. Galatasaray is now reportedly asking for over €30 million for the midfielder. Any future approach from Sunderland or Leeds would require a considerable financial commitment, exceeding their previous winter offers.

Is €30m a Wise Investment for Sunderland?

Given the circumstances, Sunderland’s recruitment strategy appears to have evolved, especially as they seek a mid-table position in the Premier League as of February 2026. The Black Cats have demonstrated their ambition by targeting a player of Sara’s caliber. However, the €30 million asking price could be seen as excessive, especially as they are still working to solidify their place in the top tier.

The Brazilian, turning 27 this summer, is close to making the Brazil national squad. He combines South American flair with experience in English leagues. Sunderland typically focuses on younger players for potential resale. Investing heavily in a player in the midst of his career may contradict this strategy.

Régis Le Bris may appreciate Sara’s versatility, but relying on local talent and strategic loan deals might be a more sustainable growth approach. If Sunderland aims for European spots, they must decide whether a major signing like Sara aligns with their goals, or if he could turn out to be a costly risk, especially after previously rejecting them.
