Swedish politician Mikael Damberg criticized his country’s economic path by referencing Tottenham Hotspur, likening Sweden’s government to the north London club.
Damberg made his comments during a parliamentary debate, using a football analogy to express his worries about national finances.
It’s likely that Tottenham fans didn’t expect their club to be included in Swedish political discussions.

Mikael Damberg compares Sweden’s economy to Tottenham Hotspur
Damberg stated, “I can’t help but think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs. It’s one of England’s well-known clubs.
“A wealthy club with a large stadium. Everything points to them being a top team. Yet, Tottenham is in crisis, struggling at the bottom of the table.”
His analogy highlighted a perceived lack of success despite strong foundations.
He drew parallels between Tottenham’s modern stadium and commercial power with Sweden’s economic resources, before shifting focus to disappointing results.
Damberg warns Sweden risks becoming ‘Spursy’
He added, “The club is often labeled ‘Spursy’ for having chances but not achieving results.
“Madame Speaker, that’s exactly how the Minister of Finance is treating the Swedish economy. The government is at risk of making Sweden ‘Spursy’. That won’t work. Sweden needs to perform better than Tottenham.”
The term “Spursy” is frequently used by critics to describe Tottenham’s tendency to fall short in crucial moments.
Damberg used this term to critique what he sees as lost economic opportunities under the current government.
The comments quickly gained attention online, prompting reactions from both football fans and political analysts. While Spurs remain focused on gameplay, the club’s name is once again part of a broader cultural conversation beyond the Premier League.
