Tottenham lost 5-2 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
In a disappointing match for Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid quickly took a three-goal lead within the first 15 minutes. Antonin Kinsky scored two of those goals in his Champions League debut.
Kinsky was substituted by Igor Tudor in the 17th minute, and Guglielmo Vicario took over as goalkeeper for the rest of the match. Atletico Madrid secured a 5-2 victory over Tottenham at home.
The outcome at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium puts Tottenham at a significant disadvantage as they prepare for the return leg in North London next week. Atletico Madrid are now favored to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha clash heads vs. Atletico Madrid
Despite goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke, Spurs could not turn the tide. The match ended with Tottenham reduced to nine players after Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha collided in a serious head clash. Reports indicate that both players received treatment on the field. Palhinha was substituted due to concussion, while Romero attempted to continue playing but later left the field.
Tottenham has five days before their Premier League match against Liverpool, and Tudor expressed uncertainty about Romero and Palhinha’s availability.
“I don’t know. We will see. I don’t know,” Tudor stated.
Tottenham faces numerous challenges. Kinsky had a tough night, and his future at Spurs seems uncertain after this performance. The head clash between Romero and Palhinha has created further worries for the team as both defenders are doubtful for Sunday’s match against Liverpool.
Romero just returned from a four-game suspension, and if concussion protocols prevent him from playing, it would be a significant setback for Tudor. Additionally, Van de Ven will miss one match after receiving a red card against Crystal Palace, leaving Tottenham with only two fit senior centre-backs: Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin.
Palhinha was forced off the pitch by medical staff, despite wanting to continue, and his status for the match against Liverpool remains uncertain.
