Following Igor Tudor’s departure from Tottenham on Sunday, club legend Chris Waddle criticized the team sharply.
This is now considered one of the worst managerial decisions in Tottenham’s history, as they ended Tudor’s 43-day tenure as head coach. Appointing a manager without Premier League experience was a gamble, and it has turned into a major failure.
During his brief time, Tudor secured only one win in a Champions League match and one point from five Premier League games. He was brought in to save the team from relegation but leaves behind a struggling squad.
Waddle criticizes the board’s decisions
Waddle expressed his frustration about the situation at the club. He stated, “Where do Tottenham go from here? It’s looking like the Championship. I’m really worried about what’s happening at the football club.”
He added, “Tottenham has been struggling for years. A past Europa League win covered some issues, but this team isn’t good enough for the Premier League. While players need to take some responsibility, the board is the main issue. They haven’t invested properly; they’re focused on future talent instead of improving the current squad.”
Concerns about a new manager
Waddle also mentioned that a new manager might not solve the problems. He believes that the quality of the players is so low that the coaching change won’t help. “The players aren’t good enough, and that won’t change with a new manager,” he explained.
He remarked that many players lack the determination or ability to help the team recover from its current plight. “I have a lot of fond memories from my time at Tottenham and care about the club, so it’s tough to see its current state.”
No signs of fight from the players
Waddle ended with a note of caution about the chances of the team staying in the Premier League. “Don’t blame the manager for Tottenham’s issues. It’s not Igor Tudor’s fault; the club’s leadership must take responsibility.”
He stated, “Tottenham is in a fight. They have seven games left to save their season, and the players must step up and work hard. It’s about getting back to basics.”
However, he expressed doubt about their ability to stay up: “I haven’t seen anything from this group that gives me confidence they’ll be in the Premier League next season.”
Tottenham is expected to announce their new manager before the upcoming match against Sunderland.
