Cristian Romero has had a challenging season with Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur has shown a lot of inconsistency this season. While they struggled in the Premier League, they performed well in the Champions League until a disappointing 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid last night.
The team has faced changes in management and tactics, leading many players to rethink their future with the club. Tottenham’s poor performance in the Premier League has resulted in five consecutive losses, leaving them just a point above the relegation zone, especially as rivals like West Ham and Nottingham Forest have had better results recently.
If Tottenham gets relegated, a significant player departure is expected. Reports indicate that the club’s management will make difficult decisions this summer.
Cristian Romero likely to be sold by Tottenham
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham plans to sell club captain Cristian Romero at the end of the season as part of a major squad restructure. Club officials believe it may be best for all involved to part ways, even though he became captain only six months ago under former manager Thomas Frank.
Romero was appointed captain following Son Heung-min’s exit in August 2025 and signed a four-year contract to fend off interest from Atletico Madrid. However, this season has not gone well for the Argentine player.
The defender has missed six Premier League matches due to suspension, accumulating two red cards and eight yellow cards this season. He has also been sidelined by injuries. Regardless of what happens next season, it seems increasingly likely that Tottenham will try to sell Romero as part of their squad overhaul.
Atletico Madrid has renewed its interest in the 2022 World Cup winner, who has expressed frustration about the club’s direction and lack of ambition. Selling Romero, valued at over £60 million, could help Tottenham raise funds to revamp a squad that has underperformed.
With Tottenham currently sitting 16th in the league, a move to a Champions League team like Atletico Madrid is likely to attract Romero, who is looking for an exit this summer.
