Manchester United’s striker, Bryan Mbeumo, is not meeting expectations

Bryan Mbeumo is facing criticism for his recent performances, putting pressure on Michael Carrick regarding his position in the starting line-up.

Mbeumo had another underwhelming game as Manchester United lost 2-1 to Newcastle, missing key chances and having difficulty contributing to the match—unlike his usual form in significant games.

The Cameroonian has also struggled to impact the game beyond goals and assists, making it tougher to defend his position when he isn’t contributing offensively. His minimal involvement is becoming increasingly noticeable.

As Mbeumo’s difficulties become more consistent, Carrick must decide whether to continue supporting him or consider other options. There are two clear paths for the interim manager.

Amad Should Start Over Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo found it tough to impact the game on the right against Newcastle, with Lewis Hall effectively managing him throughout the match.

Some of Mbeumo’s issues on that side stem from limited support from the full-back, as there have been few overlapping runs to create space for him.

Given his lack of effectiveness, Carrick may be better off choosing Amad for the right wing. Amad’s style would provide more width and allow him to play as a true winger, rather than cutting inside as Mbeumo often does.

This change could help balance United’s attack and increase creativity, especially since Amad is more inclined to take on defenders directly.

Carrick has previously spoken positively about Amad, and his approach might be what United requires to regain momentum.

While Amad may not match Mbeumo’s scoring record, his overall play could offer better balance and more attacking choices for United going forward.

Carrick’s striker dilemma: stick with Mbeumo or revert to Sesko?

If Carrick opts to retain Mbeumo, shifting him back to his original striker position would be a logical move.

This would mean Benjamin Sesko moving to the bench, which could be necessary with tough matches against Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Liverpool upcoming.

Mbeumo scored two goals and provided an assist in three games as a striker under Carrick, contributions he has not matched while playing on the wing.

He is more effective when running into space than when playing with his back to goal. He has shown to be more dangerous up front, so repositioning him there would play to his strengths.

Any of these changes could enhance United’s structure. Now, it’s up to Carrick to make the call ahead of the match against Villa.
