Sebastian Berhalter scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

Berhalter’s goal was Vancouver’s second in stoppage time. The team equalized when Thomas Muller converted a penalty kick.

He scored after receiving the ball at the top of the box following a deflection, shooting it past goalkeeper James Pantemis, who managed to touch the ball but could not stop it.

Muller’s penalty kick found the top-right corner after Portland’s Antony was penalized for a handball in the box.

This win marked the second time this year that the Whitecaps defeated the Timbers, who also lost 4-1 at home on March 7.

Juan Mosquera, playing his first game of the year, contributed with a goal and an assist for Portland, which is now on a five-game winless streak.

Vancouver took the lead early in the sixth minute when goalie Yohei Takaoka delivered a long goal kick. Edier Ocampo outran Pantemis to the ball and rolled it into an empty net for a 1-0 advantage.

The Timbers equalized in the 36th minute with a looping clearance that found Mosquera, who scored with a right-footed shot from just outside the box.

After battling an ankle injury, Mosquera set up Portland’s second goal in stoppage time of the first half, assisting David Da Costa, who scored with a delicate shot to make it 2-1.

New midfielder Jose Caicedo made his MLS debut for Portland after joining from Pumas UNAM.

Diego Chara received a yellow card, marking the 124th of his career, which places him atop the all-time MLS leaderboard.
