Wayne Rooney is a well-known figure at Manchester United, and he might return to management soon.
He joined the club in 2004, beginning his career there, and became one of its greatest players.
When he left to join Everton in 2017, he was the club’s all-time top scorer with 253 goals in 559 games over 13 years.
After retiring as a player, Rooney transitioned to coaching, leading teams like Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle.
Despite learning from Sir Alex Ferguson, one of football’s top managers, Rooney hasn’t matched that level of success.
His time at Plymouth ended with disappointing results, which led to his dismissal, and he then explored a role as a football pundit.
He started working as a pundit on Match of the Day in early 2025, earning £400,000 annually.
However, The Sun now reports that Rooney is interested in taking up another management position, even after a challenging 25-match period at Plymouth.
A source mentioned, “Wayne enjoys his television work but wants to return to management if the right chance arises.”
It’s suggested that he prefers a role in the Championship or League One instead of the Premier League.
Rooney had previously managed Derby during their relegation to League One in 2022 before stepping down.
He then managed D.C. United but left after the season ended, followed by a brief time at Birmingham between October 2023 and January 2024.
Plymouth appointed him despite his previous challenges, but he only managed 25 matches before leaving at the end of 2024.
Now, as he considers his options, is it time for Rooney to set aside his punditry and return to coaching?
