Dango Ouattara’s attempted Panenka penalty was a setback as West Ham advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a 5-3 victory in the shoot-out against Brentford at the London Stadium.
Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago each scored twice during regular time, leaving the teams tied after 120 minutes, necessitating penalties to determine the winner.
Ouattara’s chipped shot was easily saved by Areola, and Konstantinos Mavropanos scored the decisive penalty, ensuring a perfect record for the Hammers in the shoot-out.
The match began energetically, with West Ham taking the lead in the 19th minute when Bowen flicked a close-range shot past Caoimhin Kelleher, after Mateus Fernandes’ cross was unintentionally redirected by Kristoffer Ajer.
Brentford responded shortly after, equalizing in the 28th minute when Thiago headed in a ball deflected from James Collins, a goal that survived a VAR check for a possible handball.
Bowen then put West Ham back in front by converting a penalty awarded after Michael Kayode collided with Adama Traore in the box; this decision was confirmed by VAR after the referee initially dismissed the calls.
Brentford earned a penalty of their own in the 81st minute when Kayode was pushed by Crysencio Summerville, and Thiago successfully converted again from the spot.
Both teams had opportunities to secure the win during extra time, but the match was decided by penalties. Bowen and Thiago scored the first two penalties in the shoot-out.
Valentin Castellanos scored next, but Ouattara’s Panenka attempt was saved. This allowed Callum Wilson, Tomas Soucek, and Mavropanos to clinch the win for West Ham.
