Gotham FC made a significant announcement just one day before the 2026 regular season kicks off. They confirmed the signing of Norwegian winger Guro Reiten from Chelsea FC, pending visa approval. Reiten will initially join the Bats on loan through the 2025-26 Women’s Super League season and will then become a free agent under a contract that lasts until 2029. At 31, she hasn’t scored or assisted in her 260 minutes of league play this WSL season but will be 35 when her contract ends. This raises questions about Gotham’s decision to pursue her.

She fills a big gap in Gotham’s roster

Reiten is a genuine left winger, a role Gotham has lacked during Juan Carlos Amorós’s tenure. Previous players in this position, such as Ella Stevens, Gabi Portilho, and Lynn Biyendolo, are no longer with the club. Jaedyn Shaw, while talented, excels as an attacking midfielder. Adding a natural winger like Reiten can significantly boost a team that has historically struggled to score goals.

She’s a pretty good player

Despite her current season being affected by reduced playing time due to Chelsea’s signing of Alyssa Thompson, Reiten averaged 6.2 goals and 5.2 assists over 22 WSL games, translating to 0.96 goals and assists per 90 minutes. This season, she has still managed to record 5 assists and 1 goal in competitions outside the WSL. What skills does Guro Reiten bring?

Cross a ball into the box

In the 2024-25 WSL season, when she received consistent playing time, Reiten ranked in the 90th percentile for successful crosses, averaging 2.06 per game.

She has demonstrated her ability to deliver effective aerial crosses.
