Troy Deeney did not include Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo in his BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week, despite their strong performances against Tottenham.

Mainoo made his fourth straight start under interim manager Michael Carrick, again playing the full match in midfield.

The midfielder provided another assist, helping Mbeumo score, bringing his season total to two assists in four games.

The Cameroonian forward scored the opening goal in the first half, finishing a well-organized set-piece at Old Trafford.

Things went downhill for Tottenham as Cristian Romero was given a direct red card for a poor tackle on Casemiro in the first half.

Mainoo assisted Mbeumo’s goal with a first-time pass from a well-executed corner that began with Bruno Fernandes during Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

Though Fernandes did not provide the assist, he scored himself late in the second half. Dalot sent in a low cross, and the captain finished from close range, securing the win.

Troy Deeney highlighted how Carrick has helped Fernandes return to form as an attacking player for United.

“What a difference a manager makes – being able to be free, get on the ball, go wherever he wants and be creative,” Deeney said.

“I think Michael Carrick deserves a lot of credit for that. Another goal for him against Spurs, another win for United – he has to be included,” the former Watford striker added.

Ruben Amorim had moved Fernandes to a two-man midfield, reducing his attacking chances. He played deeper and had less impact compared to previous seasons.

Since taking over, Carrick has adopted a different strategy, moving away from Amorim’s restrictive tactics.

Carrick has reassigned Fernandes to his natural No. 10 position. This shift has allowed him to thrive individually and strengthen his connection with Mbeumo.

Early results are promising. The captain has one goal and four assists in Carrick’s first four matches as interim head coach.
