Upcoming Decision Day Will Determine Final Playoff Spots in MLS
Next weekend marks Decision Day, the final round of matches before the playoffs commence. Several teams still have a chance to qualify for postseason play, while others are set to conclude their seasons.
As the MLS season approaches its climax, here’s a look at the current state of the league.
Vancouver Whitecaps Shine as Playoffs Approach
The Vancouver Whitecaps secured their position at the top of the Western Conference after a draw involving FC Dallas, but they solidified their status as the West’s leading team with a dominant 5-1 victory against the Seattle Sounders a day later.
With the highest Expected Goals (xG) at 70.3 and the lowest xG conceded at 37.3, the Whitecaps excel in various statistical categories as the season nears its end.
They have generated the most big chances (124), enjoyed the most touches in the opposition’s box (1,101), made the highest average tackles per game (18.8), and frequently reclaimed possession in the final third, averaging 5.7 recoveries.
This data hints at a team that plays with a high-press and attacking approach, aiming to reclaim the ball quickly and create scoring opportunities. Currently, they are tied with Supporters’ Shield winners Nashville for the top average FotMob team rating.
Seattle’s heavy loss leaves their playoff hopes uncertain, while the Whitecaps now stand as the top team in the West and the premier MLS team in Canada.
Nashville Continues Pursuit of Record After Dramatic Comeback
Despite starting behind, Nashville executed a remarkable comeback against Red Bull New York, who had initially taken a 2-0 lead thanks to a goal from their impressive teenage trio. Sekou Kone, Adri Mehmeti, and Julian Hall contributed to the opening score, with Hall netting his 13th goal of the season.
When Rafael Mosquera added a second goal, it seemed the Red Bulls were set for an upset, vying for playoff qualification. However, Nashville turned the game around with a pair of own goals from the Red Bulls, followed by a late winner from Sam Surridge.
This victory allowed Nashville to match Inter Miami’s regular season points record of 74 from 2024, putting them in a favorable position to set a new record against FC Cincinnati in their final match.
The Red Bulls, meanwhile, faced disappointment, ending their season without a playoff spot for the second consecutive year, despite showcasing promising young talent and occasional strong performances under coach Michael Bradley.
Eastern Conference Playoff Picture Remains Unresolved
Several teams in the Eastern Conference, including the Red Bulls, have seen their playoff hopes dashed even with one game remaining. Currently, every team below the playoff line has already been eliminated from contention.
Despite the league allowing 60% of teams to qualify for the postseason, this absence from the playoffs highlights the disappointing seasons for teams such as New York City FC, Toronto FC, DC United, Atlanta United, and CF Montreal.
In contrast, the Western Conference still has playoff spots up for grabs, with LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers, and Colorado Rapids currently holding those positions, yet vulnerable to being overtaken by Seattle Sounders, Real Salt Lake, and Minnesota United.
A crucial match between Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy could determine which team secures a playoff slot.
Marco Reus Delivers with Three Assists
Marco Reus has had a relatively quiet season playing for LA Galaxy, as the team’s performance has mirrored his own inconsistencies. With a record of 11 wins, 11 losses, and 11 draws, qualification for the playoffs remains uncertain for the Galaxy.
In their crucial 4-1 victory over Austin FC ahead of Decision Day, Reus showcased his talents with three assists, earning him the highest match rating of the day. He has registered six assists and four goals in his last nine appearances, an impressive feat considering only five of those were starts.
A standout performance in the final match could help propel LA Galaxy into the playoffs.
