As of Wednesday morning, uncertainty surrounded whether Giannis Antetokounmpo would remain with the Milwaukee Bucks as the trade deadline approached at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday.

In an interview with Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Antetokounmpo discussed his future.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Ambitions with the Bucks

“I want to be a Milwaukee Buck for the rest of my career,” Antetokounmpo stated. “I want to win here, another championship. If you can assure me that’s possible, we can end the call and go about our day.”

While some Bucks fans may appreciate these remarks, the reality is that Milwaukee is not just one offseason away from creating a competitive roster to satisfy Antetokounmpo. The team, currently in 12th place, had a record of 19-29 as of Wednesday. Previously, Antetokounmpo expressed concerns about some teammates not playing with enough effort or selflessness before suffering a calf injury in late January.

During his conversation with Nehm, Antetokounmpo emphasized he would “1,000 percent” consider staying with the Bucks for at least one more season if they can show him they can compete in the following year. He could become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027 if he decides to decline the player option in his current contract.

A two-time MVP, Antetokounmpo has spent his entire career with the Bucks, who drafted him 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. Reports have linked him with teams like the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miami Heat. However, the Bucks might choose to complete a major trade later to open the competition for Antetokounmpo’s services.

Different Timelines for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks

In another interview, Antetokounmpo reiterated his desire to win with the Bucks. However, the focus on winning may have been significant in his statement.

“It’s always about competing,” Antetokounmpo remarked. “I feel like I’m 31. There are fewer chances ahead for me to compete at my best. I want to return to that level soon, as time is running out. How long is my prime? If I’m fortunate, maybe 36 or 37. If I follow LeBron James’ path, perhaps 41, but let’s be realistic. Time waits for no one.”

Although the future of Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee seems uncertain, it doesn’t imply a quick resolution may happen this week.
