Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo had a remarkable game against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, recording one of the highest scores in NBA history.

Adebayo not only set a new single-game scoring record for the Heat with 83 points, surpassing LeBron James’ previous record of 61 set in 2014, but he also broke Kobe Bryant’s 81 points, marking the second-highest score in league history, just behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in 1962.

He also set new NBA records for free throws made (36) and attempted (43) and was even quadruple-teamed by the Wizards in the game’s final moments. However, some critics took issue with the decision to foul Wizards players multiple times in the closing minutes to allow Adebayo more scoring chances.

Erik Spoelstra responds to critics of late-game strategy during Adebayo’s historic performance

During a press conference before Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks (27-38), Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addressed criticisms regarding the final minutes of the game. He stated, “I apologize to absolutely no one,” as noted by Sports Illustrated’s Brady Hawk.

The Wizards (16-49) have struggled this season and did not present a significant challenge to the Heat in Tuesday’s game.

It’s important to note that the Heat (38-29) were missing key players, including Norman Powell, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, and Kel’el Ware, which made Adebayo’s performance even more critical.

“Most of the people that made comments didn’t even watch the game. That’s unethical,” Spoelstra added.

Regardless of opinions on the game’s final minutes, Adebayo’s record-setting performance should be recognized, regardless of the opponent or the game’s outcome.

“Everything was fairly conventional,” Spoelstra mentioned. “There was a goal in mind when that clock hit two minutes to chase a mark that may never be achieved again, and anybody that is involved with the game of basketball would jump at that opportunity if it was ever presented.”

It was indeed unusual for Adebayo to remain in the game until only 1:08 was left, but such exceptional performances are rare in the NBA.

The Heat are currently enjoying a seven-game winning streak, showing signs of improvement after a slow start. While player health is crucial as the season reaches its final stretch, Adebayo’s historic performance should not be overlooked.

Regardless of differing views on the game’s management in the last minutes, Adebayo’s extraordinary scoring achievement deserved all the attention it received. It will be remembered as one of the finest performances in NBA history, and Spoelstra aimed to maximize that moment.
