Many expected the Boston Celtics to be in rebuilding mode this season.

Some key players were traded, and Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury from last year’s playoffs raised concerns. Such injuries often require a full recovery year.

Despite this, Boston currently stands at 34-19, ranking second in the Eastern Conference, showing no signs of a rebuild. Jaylen Brown is performing like an MVP contender, and coach Joe Mazzulla is getting consistent output from his team.

The Detroit Pistons lead the league at 39-13, while the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors are all close behind Boston. While not everyone is ready to consider the Celtics as contenders, the conversation will change once Tatum returns.

Celtics legend Paul Pierce discussed this on “No Fouls Given,” emphasizing the impact Tatum’s return could have.

“I think the Celtics should be the favorite in the East. Currently, they’re second in the East. Adding a first-team All-NBA player coming off an Achilles injury doesn’t require him to be at his peak; he just needs to be a dependable presence, capable of hitting crucial shots and facilitating plays. That alone could enhance their performance.

“If he can play 20 out of the next 28 games, I believe they could end up with a record around 15-5.”
