Although LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves are strong players, the Los Angeles Lakers face significant challenges that could affect their playoff hopes. They have the highest field-goal percentage in the league at 49.9%, but their three-point shooting is weak, ranking 19th in the NBA at 34.9%.
The team appears to rely heavily on its star players, with the bench sitting at the bottom in scoring. If James, Doncic, and Reaves continue to miss time, this could lead to deeper issues for the Lakers.
In a competitive Western Conference, many expected the Lakers to seek a three-and-D role player to enhance their roster and aim for a better playoff position. While their trade deadline moves were minimal, they still possess resources to address their shortcomings and aim for a strong postseason run.
Here are three Lakers players who might make a difference as the season progresses:
Luke Kennard
Kennard was the only player acquired by Los Angeles at the trade deadline. Leading the NBA in three-point shooting percentage, he could be a valuable asset off the bench.
Even though he may not excel defensively, if Kennard maintains his shooting accuracy, he can help open up the game for his teammates. In his early games with the Lakers, he shot 50% from beyond the arc.
Kobe Bufkin
Bufkin had a short stint with the Purple and Gold before being sent back to the South Bay Lakers, leaving his future unclear. During his time, he played in four games but only had significant minutes in two. The Lakers signing him to a two-year deal suggests they see potential in him moving forward.
In the G League, Bufkin showed his scoring ability, leading with 27.7 points per game, and also contributed defensively with averages of 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks. If he gets more playing time, he could add depth to the team.
Maxi Kleber
Kleber has been a bench player since his arrival but has recently had more minutes against teams like the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers, achieving plus-minus statistics of plus-23 and plus-12.
His past performances have shown his ability to stretch the floor, and if he continues to get more minutes, his effective play could help the Lakers create better spacing in crucial games.
