Wembanyama emphasized his defensive contributions, arguing that his unique skill set sets him apart in the MVP race, especially when compared to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He presented three key points to support his argument.

“My first point is that defense accounts for half of the game, and it’s often undervalued in the MVP discussion,” Wembanyama stated. “I believe I’m the most impactful defensive player in the league. Secondly, we almost swept OKC this season, winning against them three times with their core players and four times with their rotation players. Lastly, my offensive impact involves more than just scoring points.”

He elaborated on his last point, highlighting the attention he draws in pick-and-roll situations. He noted that data shows he ranks alongside Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic as the top roll man in the NBA. However, he recognizes that voters need to prioritize defensive performance more for him to secure MVP recognition.

“This will come with time,” Wembanyama said. “If there had been more players like Giannis Antetokounmpo in past years, maybe defense would be acknowledged more.”

Wembanyama is averaging 24.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 blocks in 29.3 minutes per game this season, with shooting percentages of .504, .356, and .818. These offensive stats contrast with Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive 31.6 points and 6.6 assists, along with shooting percentages of .553, .390, and .888.

Nevertheless, Wembanyama’s numbers show his defensive impact. When he’s on the court, the Spurs have a +16.6 net rating and a 103.5 defensive rating, while his absence leads to a -0.1 net rating and a 113.7 defensive rating. According to Weiss, some voters have indicated they would support Wembanyama if the Spurs (54-18) surpass the Thunder (57-15) for the best record in the NBA.

After his discussion with Weiss, Wembanyama told reporters that he aims to strengthen his MVP case by closing the season effectively.

“Right now, there is a debate,” he mentioned. “There should be, although I believe I should be leading. I will work hard to ensure there’s no debate by the end of the season.”
