The Seattle Sounders have transferred midfielder Obed Vargas to Atletico Madrid, a top club in La Liga, as of Monday.
Vargas has signed a contract with Atletico that lasts until June 30, 2030. Reports state that the Sounders will receive a record transfer fee for this deal.
Head coach Brian Schmetzer expressed his happiness for Vargas, praising his dedication and progress as a player. “He has developed into a confident and influential player,” Schmetzer said. “This is a significant moment for Obed and his family, and I’m confident he’s prepared for the challenge ahead at Atletico Madrid.”
Vargas has been a long-time supporter of Atletico, having previously expressed his desire to play for the club. He mentioned last year his hopes for joining them, citing their strong history in Spanish soccer with 11 La Liga titles.
“I hope to one day play with Atletico,” Vargas said after a match against them during the 2025 Club World Cup. “If I continue to perform well, I believe that opportunity will come.”
Born in Alaska, Vargas made his first-team debut for the Sounders at just 15 years and 351 days old in 2021.
Over five seasons, Vargas appeared in 130 matches for Seattle across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing 16 assists. He played a key role in helping the Sounders secure the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2022 and the Leagues Cup in 2025.
In addition to his club career, Vargas also represents Mexico internationally, earning three caps with the national team.
