Newell’s Old Boys, an Argentine club, is planning to bring two-time MLS MVP Lionel Messi back to his original team next year.
A club executive shared that they are trying to convince Messi to return for the first half of 2027.
“This project goes beyond just Newell’s. It includes the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football,” said first vice president Juan Manuel Medina, as reported by ESPN on Wednesday.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, signed an extension with Inter Miami, the current MLS Cup champions, in October, ensuring his presence until the end of 2028.
At 38 years old, Messi played for Newell’s youth teams from 1995 to 2000 before joining the FC Barcelona academy.
Inter Miami will kick off the 2026 MLS season on February 21 against Los Angeles FC. Messi is also preparing to defend Argentina’s World Cup title this summer in North America.
