John Terry Among the Premier League Legends
Chelsea Icon Talks About Top Defenders
John Terry is undeniably one of the top defenders in Premier League history. He played 717 matches for Chelsea, scoring 67 goals, and won numerous titles, including five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three Carabao Cups, one Europa League, and one Champions League.
Terry was a top centre-back known for his game intelligence and leadership. His positioning allowed him to effectively shut down many threats. He consistently performed at a high level for many years, and his notable skill included making precise long passes with either foot.
Terry’s Choice for the Best Defender in Premier League History
On the Double Tops podcast, Terry was asked who he considers the greatest Premier League defender. He stated, “The debate started about me, Rio, Vidic, and then it shifted mainly to me. I think myself, Rio, Vidic, we represent different eras compared to Virgil.”
“Virgil van Dijk is the best of this generation. He has been outstanding in the Premier League for the last four or five years. Personally, I’d choose Rio Ferdinand for his longevity and achievements at a top club like Manchester United. I won’t say I’m the best; I just know I lead in scoring for defenders and clean sheets, so I can defend my record.”
“But if I had to choose, it would be Rio because of what he accomplished and the club he played for.”
