Manchester United will look to narrow the gap to Premier League leaders as they face Newcastle this weekend. Michael Carrick has some selection challenges, some of which are outside his control.

With Liverpool‘s loss to Wolves, United can gain some ground if they win against Newcastle.

The team has not won at St James’ Park since the 2020/21 season. Here’s the latest injury news and everything else to know before kick-off.

Is Harry Maguire playing?

Harry Maguire is currently ill and couldn’t finish the match against Crystal Palace.

He will undergo a late fitness test before the game. If he can’t play, Ayden Heaven is likely to take his place alongside Leny Yoro in the starting lineup.

Leny Yoro or Ayden Heaven?

If Harry Maguire is available, the focus shifts to who will play alongside him.

Leny Yoro has partnered with Maguire in the last two matches, but an error led to Crystal Palace’s goal, which could prompt a change.

Ayden Heaven had a standout performance in the last match against Newcastle, where he won man of the match in United’s 1-0 victory last December.

Left-back decision: Shaw or Mazraoui?

Luke Shaw played only 24 minutes against Crystal Palace before being substituted, allowing Noussair Mazraoui to step in and perform well.

Mazraoui will hope his performance was enough to keep his position, even if Shaw is fit to play.

Should United rotate in midfield or stick with the usual pairing?

This appears straightforward: keep Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, as they have been working well together.

However, given that this is United’s second game in four days, fresh legs could be beneficial. Manuel Ugarte is available as an alternative if required.

If Ugarte doesn’t play again, it may indicate uncertainty about his future with the club ahead of the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Sesko to continue, and who misses out?

Michael Carrick will also need to decide whether to stick with Benjamin Sesko, who impressed against Crystal Palace.

Amad was the player substituted in that match, and Carrick now has to consider if it will be Amad again or if Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo will rotate out instead.
