Raphael Veiga scored the only goal as Club America defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania, during the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16.
The second leg of the two-game series is scheduled for March 18 in Mexico City. The team that wins will move on to the quarterfinals, facing either Nashville SC or Inter Miami.
The Union had a 9-7 edge in total shots, but none were on target. Philadelphia goalkeeper Andrew Rick made two saves during the match.
Club America goalkeeper Angel Malagon sustained an injury late in the first half and was replaced by Rodolfo Cota. Neither goalkeeper registered a save.
