In European knockout football, second chances are rare, especially when the stakes rise quickly.
For clubs at the highest level, one bad moment can lead to a downward spiral, particularly if confidence is low.
Tottenham Hotspur faced this challenge during their Champions League Round of 16 match against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
Tottenham was quickly put under pressure at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Atletico racing to a three-goal lead within the first 15 minutes.
Interim manager Igor Tudor chose to start 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky for his Champions League debut.
This decision meant that regular goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was benched in a key match for the club.
Unfortunately, the choice did not pay off.
Atletico’s aggressive start took advantage of the young goalkeeper, who was at fault for two of the early goals.
Even with goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke later in the game, the damage was already done.
Atletico secured a 5-2 victory, leaving Tottenham with a difficult road ahead in the matchup and seriously hurting their chances of advancing further.
The situation became especially tense when Tudor substituted Kinsky after just 17 minutes, ending the youngster’s Champions League debut abruptly.
This decision sparked discussion among fans and analysts, but former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea quickly offered support to Kinsky on social media.
De Gea wrote, “No one who hasn’t been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play in this position. Keep your head up and you will go again.”
De Gea understands the pressures of being a goalkeeper well.
He spent over a decade at Manchester United after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making more than 540 appearances and winning several titles, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League.
He won the club’s Player of the Year award four times, highlighting his importance during his tenure at Old Trafford.
However, his time at United ended when his contract expired in 2023 and the club opted not to renew it.
After taking a break from football, De Gea returned and is now playing in Serie A with ACF Fiorentina.
