Goalkeeper James Pantemis made six saves as the undermanned Portland Timbers played to a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.

The Timbers were down to 10 players for the last 70 minutes after defender Kamal Miller received a red card.

Kristoffer Velde scored for Portland (1-3-1, 4 points), helping the team end a three-match losing streak.

Joao Klauss equalized for the Galaxy (1-2-2, 5 points), ending their two-game losing streak. Galaxy’s goalie JT Marcinkowski made two saves.

Even with the numerical advantage, the Galaxy’s winless streak on the road extended to 20 matches (0-12-8) since October 2, 2024.

The first half ended 1-1 after a series of intense moments.

The Timbers took an early lead in the 13th minute thanks to a quick passing sequence.

Joao Ortiz passed to Antony, who then set up Velde on the left side of the penalty area. Velde’s low, left-footed shot from 10 yards found the back of the net as Marcinkowski, in his first MLS start this season, attempted a kick save.

The match changed in the 19th minute when Miller fouled Klauss while trying to stop a counterattack. Referee Drew Fischer initially showed a yellow card but reviewed the play after a call from the video assistant referee. Fischer then upgraded the card to a red, deciding Miller had recklessly stepped on Klauss’ right Achilles.

The Galaxy equalized in the 30th minute after a turnover by Portland in their own territory.

Gabriel Pec seized the loose ball and passed it to Marco Reus at the top right of the box. Reus then set up Klauss with a back-heel pass, allowing Klauss to fire a powerful left-footed shot from 8 yards out past Pantemis. This marked Klauss’ fifth goal in the first five MLS matches of the season.
